Some of the Program Content:

With all of the conflict in our nation today about our flag and how it should be treated, it is important that we be reminded not just what the flag is, but what it does.

And the best way to make a valid point is with a story – and what a story I have for your listeners on this very special day.

It is the true story of the WWII battle for Iwo Jima told by the Vets who were there.

We all think we know that story because we’ve seen the U.S. Marine Memorial of the brave Marines raising that flag on Mount Saribachi during that battle.

But did you know:

  • Why raising that flag at Iwo Jima was so important to the cause for freedom that the men raising it were ordered to get that flag up no matter what?
  • That 28,000 Marines were killed or wounded in that battle for Iwo Jima in just 36 days, making it the single bloodiest battle in all of WWII?
  • There were two flags raised on that mountain? The famous picture we all know is of the second flag raised; what is the real story of the first flag? One of the Marines in that first flag raising group will be on the program to tell that story.
  • Finally, what did those brave American Marines learn that day on that island in the middle of the Pacific about our flag? And what do they need to remind us today about our flag? Believe you me, there are so many Americans today that must hear this story –

and it’s all being told by the men who were there.
